A longtime friend told the Cedar Falls Courier that the cause of death was Robert James Waller (Barry King / Getty) Robert James Waller, the writer who penned the 1992 best-seller “The Bridges of Madison County,” died Friday, March 10, 2017, according to multiple news Robert James Waller lived on a remote ranch in the high-desert mountains of Texas, where he pursued his interests in writing, photography, music, economics, and mathematics. He was the New York Times bestselling author of The Bridges of Madison County , which was adapted into a film starring Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood and also as a Robert James Waller (1939–2017) Writer. Born: August 1, 1939 in Charles City, Iowa, USA. Died: March 10, 2017 (age 77) in Fredericksburg, Robert James Waller was an American fiction author best known for his book The Bridges of Madison County of 1993. He graduated with a degree in Bachelor in Arts in 1962 and masters in arts in 1964 from the University of Northern Lowa. Later in 1968, he studied PhD in business at Indiana Bloomington.
